Polymer Clay Batik & Shimmer Technique

I'm getting ready to publish this new technique which will be my 23rd polymer clay tutorial.
I'm calling it Batik and Shimmer. The tutorial which is now ready has two variations on the technique.
Btw...one could make buttons with this technique as the finished product is washable!

I'm getting some good feedback with the pendants and a few people have expressed they'd like to know how I achieve this look. I only discovered it a while ago and some may feel I will be sharing it too soon instead of selling the finished work I create from it...although I am thinking of listing pendants and cabochons for others to incorporate into their beadwork. So what should I do...??
What would you do and please be honest with your answer...you can vote by clicking in the check box below if you want to stay anonymous, lol.....or I'd appreciate if you left me a comment :)

I'm dying to learn how you do this! But even saying that, I would be tempted to say wait on the tut and focus on selling your masterpieces before letting others mimic your technique. (But really I want you to just tell us already!) I know, I'm indecisive. :)

Hi, those are so pretty, and of course we all want to know how to do it. I think personally, going ahead with the tutorial is a great idea. The people who are already polymer clay addicts will want to "make their own" and you will still be able to sell to people who don't do clay or who don't want to bother to learn a new technique but want some pieces to bead or whatever. So, I'd do both as you discussed doing. I, again personally, wouldn't buy the individual pieces, but would love to learn the technique (and would buy the tut) because I can think of some other things to try it out with. Smiles, Sue C

My attitude at this point in my career is that no matter how many people copy me, they will never catch up! I will veer off into a new series and always produce and create something exciting and different and gauging by what I read about you on your blog, you are the same way. I'd go for selling and the tutorial. Do it all. You'll be off and running in a new direction by the time everyone is using your technique!

I agree with Sue C, I think you can do both!! And I can't wait to get the Tut!!!

I would love to see you tutorial available in the near future (like later today). Knowing how to do something is not the same as having the eye, the talent and the creative spark that makes your work so beautiful. I would capitalize from the excitement these unique pieces have created by doing it all. A tutorial may actually drive sales for your finished pieces!

I am checking my PayPal to see if I have enough money for the tutorial. Do you have it posted yet? How about now? Now? OK... waiting patiently!

I think you should charge a reasonable fee for the tutorial, it will keep a steady revenue coming in, & gives you a lot of credibility.
I don't know if you have done other tutorials, but if people are interested, I'd go for it.
I also think selling your finished pieces is still a good idea, you put your own creativity into the piece, with your design and colors. How exciting for you. Congrats.
Good Luck!

Hi, Tina,
I would flip a coin. One side would be selling only/tutorials later, and the other side would be sell AND do tutorials, immediately. When you flip the coin, if you don't like the results you get, you KNOW what to do....!

Works every time for me. ;^)

(I'm kinda with Healing Woman, in that you will be ahead of the game, technique-wise, with a new technique coming soon, so selling your products and the tutorial now won't make any difference.)

I say do both because no one will ever have your sense of color, balance and style. everyone has their own.

Tina, Your expertise is there. Sharing your work is a great idea. We as the public would love a guide on how to do something like this. And then on top of that you are selling the product that you have created..You are sharing it both ways to the world. I think that this is a great way of getting your work out there. People love the how to books.

Hi Tina, You are already know as a great "teacher" and after trying one of your tutorials I was most impressed. This is a tutorial I might even consider as it is so cool.

I always feel that you can do both a tutorial as well as sell your pieces as you are the original creator and designer and no one else could do exactly like you.

Absolutely Stunning! I would buy this tutorial. I sew as well as do beading and can see fabulous buttons coming from this technique.

I feel like I'm just repeating what everybody before me has already said but why not have the best of both worlds? Yes indeed, do the tutorial (and I agree that today would be a great time to make it available!!!) and sell the pieces you've made. Most of us will take your tutorial and put our own twist on it so no two will ever be exactly alike - right? I'll keep checking back to see when the tutorial is available!

I say sell your tutorial and your pendants at the same time. Your work is so unique and beautiful...difficult to copy that. I would love to learn how to make these wonderful pendants!

I vote for sell tutorial and pendants at the same time. Most of the time it is a different market.
